Getting started

  1. Install Mint Cookie Consent from the Shopify App Store. The app home shows a setup checklist with the status of each step.
  2. Turn on the app embed: on the app home click Open theme editor. The theme editor opens with the Cookie consent app embed switched on — click Save.
  3. Turn off Shopify's own cookie banner: click Turn off Shopify's banner on the app home (or in Shopify: Settings → Customer privacy → Cookie banner → More actions → Remove cookie banner). While Shopify's banner is on, the app's banner stays hidden so shoppers never see two.
  4. Regions: in Settings, choose where consent is asked (EU and EEA, UK, Switzerland, other countries, or everywhere) and the US states with a data sale opt-out, then save. The app writes them to Shopify's privacy settings, so Shopify's pixels and analytics follow the same regions.
  5. Test: open your store in a private browser window, or open https://your-store.myshopify.com/?mint_consent=preview to see the banner from anywhere, or ?mint_consent=preview-us for the US privacy notice (Pro). Choices you make there are real for that browser.

How it works

  • Shopify's Customer Privacy API. The banner reads the shopper's region and earlier choice from Shopify and saves every choice with Shopify's API. Shopify's analytics, app pixels and custom pixels follow it: in consent regions they wait until the shopper allows their purposes.
  • Fair choices. Accept all and Reject all always look the same. Nothing is ticked in advance. The banner stays until the shopper chooses and doesn't block the page.
  • US states. In the states you choose, Shopify treats sale and sharing as opt-out and honours the Global Privacy Control signal itself. With Pro, shoppers there get a “Your privacy choices” link with “Do not sell or share my personal information” and an optional one-time notice.
  • Global Privacy Control. Accept all never turns sale or sharing on for a shopper whose browser sends GPC. With Pro, GPC is recorded as an opt-out of sale and sharing in every region.
  • Texts. Built-in texts in 14 languages (English, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Spanish, Swedish) follow your storefront language, name Shopify and link to your privacy policy. With Pro you can write your own texts for any language.
  • Accessibility. The banner is a labelled region first in the page, buttons are at least 44 pixels tall, Preferences open in a modal dialog that keeps keyboard focus inside and closes with Esc, and reduced motion is respected.
  • Speed. One deferred script of about 7 KB compressed from Shopify's CDN; styles load only when the banner shows; the banner floats over the page so nothing moves. On the Free plan the script never contacts our servers.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't make your store compliant on its own and isn't legal advice. What you need depends on where you sell, your privacy policy and your tools.
  • It doesn't block tracking code pasted into your theme files. Apps and pixels that use Shopify's Customer Privacy API follow the choice; move other tracking code to a custom pixel in Settings → Customer events, or remove it.

Troubleshooting

  • The banner doesn't appear. Check the app home: the app embed must be on, Shopify's own banner off, and the banner turned on in the app. Shoppers outside your regions don't see it, and shoppers who already chose aren't asked again — use a private window or the preview link.
  • Two banners. Shopify's own banner is still on: turn it off from the app home. The app's banner stays hidden while Shopify's is on.
  • "Shopify won't take region changes from apps". Shopify accepts region changes only after its own cookie banner is turned off. Turn it off, then click Save regions again on the app home.
  • Letting shoppers change their choice. Keep the floating Cookie settings button on, or add a link to /#mint-consent in your footer menu.

Plans

Free: the banner with Accept all and Reject all, choices saved with Shopify's Customer Privacy API, consent regions and US opt-out states written to Shopify, built-in texts. Pro ($5.99 every 30 days, 7-day free trial): preferences with cookie categories, US privacy choices, Global Privacy Control everywhere, consent log with CSV export, full styling and your own texts. No limit on visitors or page views on either plan.

Uninstalling

Uninstall from Settings → Apps. Shopify removes the app embed with the app; nothing was added to your theme's code. The regions the app wrote stay in Settings → Customer privacy — turn Shopify's cookie banner back on there (or install another banner) so shoppers can still give consent. Your settings and consent log are deleted 48 hours after uninstalling.
